100 Days Project

Lu: 100 Big Days (and Nights) Out

I realised I have kept a heap of tickets to mainly music gigs & festivals over the years, as well as a lot of sports fixtures, from both here, UK and Europe. So each day there will be a photo of a ticket accompanied by a hazy memory from that gig… and a musical tip to go with it.

As I go, a playlist on Spotify called ‘100 Big Days Out’ will be built up of the tracks I single out from those gigs/artists/events. Check it out http://open.spotify.com/user/1230930937/playlist/68S65odxiGB6v7hz4exHTL

Day 58:

The Chemical Brothers, The Roundhouse, London, May 2007

When The Roundhouse reopened in Camden, it was a great venue to go and see bands in an almost showcase atmosphere because the venue was quite small, with a low stage - it was really like being in a club. This meant you could be closer, and see the whites of their eyes. No slovenly retroschpektive for the Chems though - they were always still releasing material, and this tour was for the album We Are The Night. I know saying that a great thing about these two is that ‘you know what you are going to get live’ could be interpreted as them being predictable, and musically staid, but it is the all-encompassing live mix, frantic pacing and visual madness that is the ‘knowns’. It is just a party, and at The Roundhouse it was on a smaller scale compared to festivals or large concert halls. And with every new album, comes new additions to the live show as they move through the years. The single from We Are The Night was the slightly paranoid disco of ‘Do It Again’, and ever since then it has become a staple in the live show. Even now, writing this, I can see in my mind psychedelic running cops, marching giant robots, and big evil clowns. In a good way. Still loyal to The Chemical Brothers. Won’t hear a bad word said against them by ‘purist’ twats. Ed & Tom remain one of the best electronic live acts in the world, and they will appear in ny 100 Days at least once more… in much bigger venues. But this night was so cool seeing them in ‘a club’. Do it again? Oh yes. The Chemical Brothers – Do It Again
